Pulmonary disease

Pulmonary or lung disease is a condition where lung function is impaired. It is estimated that more than 35 million Americans are currently living with pulmonary disease. The physicians of ILI are board certified in pulmonary medicine and use their combined experience to bring you comprehensive care.

Pulmonary disease is separated into two categories, obstructive and restrictive.
Obstructive pulmonary disease causes a decrease in exhaled airflow due to a narrowing or blockage of the airways. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), emphysema, asthma, and chronic bronchitis are examples of obstructive pulmonary disease.

Restrictive pulmonary disease can cause a decrease in the lung’s ability to expand, to transfer oxygen or carbon dioxide with the blood, and a loss of lung tissue. Examples of restrictive pulmonary diseases include pulmonary fibrosis (including sarcoidosis), lung cancer and pneumonia.

We believe patient education is one of the keys to the treatment and management of your pulmonary condition. Click on the links above for more information, or see our glossary of terms for definitions of various conditions and procedures.
